Workshop on ‘Empowering Women in Media: Future Journalists for a Greener Punjab’ Day-2

 



The valedictory session of the highly anticipated two-day workshop, ‘Empowering Women in Media: Future Journalists for a Greener Punjab,’ concluded today at the Skill Development Centre, Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya (HRMMV), Jalandhar, marking a significant step towards fostering environmental awareness and journalistic excellence among young women under the able guidance of Principal Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen. The workshop, a collaborative initiative by the Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST), CMS VATAVARAN, New Delhi, and Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar, was organized under the Environment Education Programme (EEP) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India. It aimed to equip aspiring women media professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary to become powerful voices for a sustainable future. Participants were made to pitch their ideas to convince their editor regarding their story to get space and time in print and electronic media. Prinicpal Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen, said, ‘Empowering young women to become bold, informed storytellers is at the heart of our institution’s mission. Through this workshop, we are not only strengthening their journalistic skills but also inspiring them to become champions for environmental sustainability. We are proud to partner in this important initiative that nurtures leadership, responsibility, and positive change.’ The workshop session was led by Mr. Manish Chandra Mishra, Assistant Editor at Mongabay-India, a DW Akademie Fellow, and a graduate of the Oxford News Marketing Program. Mr. Mishra, with his extensive experience in environmental journalism, provided immersive training in critical areas such as fact-checking, storytelling, multimedia journalism, data analysis, digital safety, and social media engagement. The workshop garnered enthusiastic participation from more than 65 female journalism students representing more than five leading colleges in Jalandhar, demonstrating the strong interest and dedication among young women to pursue careers in media and contribute to environmental awareness. The workshop concluded with a felicitation ceremony, where Mr. Sabyesachi Bharti Deputy Director CMS Vatavaran, Mr. Kencho Dorji Associate CMS, Dr. Simran Sidhu, HoD PG Department of Journalism Doaba College Jalandhar, Dr. Rama Sharma HoD PG Department of Mass Comm. & Video Production HMV & Mr. Ashish Chadha HoD PG Department of Multimedia HMV were honoured. Participation certificates were awarded to all attendees. Vote of thanks was given by Dr. Rama Sharma. On this occasion, Ms. Sonali Beri, Ms. Heena Dhir, Ms. Jyoti Sehgal and Ms. Gaytri Kailey were also present.

Workshop on Environmental Journalism for Aspiring Women Day 1


 Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya Jalandhar hosted first-of-its-kind a two-day workshop on environmental journalism for aspiring women media professionals in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST) & CMS Vatavaran, New Delhi under the able guidance of Principal Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen. The resource person of the event was Mr. Manish Chandra Mishra Assistant Editor at Mongabay-India. The honorary guests of the event were Mr. Sabyesachi Bharti Deputy Director CMS Vatavaran, Mr. Kencho Dorji Associate CMS. They were welcomed with green planters by Dr. Navroop Dean Youth Welfare, Dr. Seema Marwaha Dean Academics, Dr. Anjana Bhatia Advisor of the event, Dr. Rama Sharma & Mr. Ashish Chadha Conveners of the event. The co-conveners of the event were Ms. Sonali Beri & Ms. Jyoti Sehgal. The title of the workshop was ‘Empowering Women in Media: Future Journalists for a Greener Punjab’. Organized under the Environment Education Programme (EEP) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, this unique initiative aimed to build the journalistic capacities of young women pursuing media studies. Around 78 female journalism students from several leading colleges and universities in Jalandhar participated in the programme. The workshop was designed to provide practical training in environmental reporting, focusing on key areas such as fact-checking, storytelling, multimedia journalism, data analysis, safety, social media engagement, and emerging trends like AI and data visualization. The inaugural session was conducted by Mr. Manish Chandra Mishra, Assistant Editor at Mongabay-India, a DW Akademie Fellow, and a graduate of the Oxford News Marketing Program. He brought extensive experience in covering environmental issues and led the participants through an immersive and skill-driven training. This workshop equipped aspiring women journalists with essential skills in environmental reporting, including fact-checking, storytelling, multimedia tools, and data journalism. Participants also learned about digital safety, ethical reporting, and emerging trends like AI in media. The training aimed to empower them to confidently report on environmental issues and become strong voices for sustainability and change in their communities. This initiative was part of CMS Vatavaran’s  broader mission to empower co-creation of innovative solutions for planetary well-being by leveraging communication technologies, strengthening capacities, curating collaborative spaces, and enabling transformative engagements.
